Martin MAC Viper Performance: discharge profile and framing

The Martin MAC Viper Performance is a discharge-lamp moving-head profile with a dedicated framing system. The manufacturer’s specification identifies a 1,000 W lamp and a 10–44° zoom. This is the Performance variant: specifications should be taken from its own documentation, rather than transferred from the MAC Viper Profile, Wash or another model in the family.

Four independently adjustable blades and a rotatable framing module give the operator control over the shape of the light. Framing is particularly relevant when comparing fixtures for a design that needs defined edges or changing proportions, rather than relying only on gobos and zoom.

Color and image-building tools

Martin’s documented effects include CMY mixing, CTO, rotating gobos, an animation wheel, iris, prism and frost. These functions offer separate controls over color, texture, size and softness. Assessing them individually helps match the fixture to the intended result: a shaped area of light, a moving texture and an aerial effect each use a different part of the feature set.

When planning a purchase for an existing show, check the control mode, console personality and installation details in the official MAC Viper Performance documentation. Published lamp and optical data identify the model’s design, while the seller’s stock information defines the quantity and unit price here. Neither establishes lamp hours, a recent relamp, maintenance history or any additional transport and mounting equipment.

Choosing framing rather than just a gobo image

The MAC Viper Performance’s framing module is the key distinction to assess when a design requires a defined area of light. A gobo places a pattern inside the field, while framing changes the field boundary. Both may be useful in a production, but one should not be described as a substitute for the other.

A programmer can then treat focus, color and texture as separate decisions. A clean framed area may need little internal pattern, while another cue may emphasize animation or a rotating texture. The available optical functions allow those approaches to be explored without making every cue a demonstration of every effect.

The discharge source also distinguishes this model from LED profiles in a modern fleet. The appropriate comparison includes the exact lamp and optical system, the required effect and the control workflow. It should not rely on a generic profile label or assume that every MAC Viper variant has the same features.
