PS10-R2 loudspeaker design

The Nexo PS10-R2 is a compact two-way loudspeaker built around a ten-inch low-frequency driver and a high-frequency compression driver. Its defining feature is NEXO’s rotatable asymmetrical horn. This allows the coverage orientation to be adapted for front-of-house use or stage monitoring while retaining the same cabinet model.

Coverage is a practical part of loudspeaker selection. A cabinet used upright to address an audience and a cabinet lying on its side as a monitor face different listening positions. The PS10-R2’s horn concept addresses that change in orientation rather than requiring the user to accept the same fixed coverage relationship in every position.

System configuration

NEXO publishes system specifications for the PS10-R2 together with the appropriate TDcontroller. The specification sheet describes an eight-ohm passive system, a rotatable horn with four positions and a stated maximum system peak level of 132dB under the manufacturer’s specified conditions. That figure is a system reference, not a measurement of the individual used unit.

The PS10-R2 can be considered for applications where a discrete compact loudspeaker or floor monitor is needed. Selecting the correct processing and amplifier arrangement remains part of the system design. Frequency response, peak level and protection information should be read in the context of the exact NEXO documentation and the chosen operating setup.

Planning a PS10-R2 system

When expanding an existing installation, confirm the model and revision of the cabinets already in use, the processing available and the required coverage. A matching product name is only the beginning of a complete system plan: cabinet orientation and signal routing also affect how the loudspeaker serves the audience or performer. The official PS10-R2 datasheet provides the model-specific reference for those decisions.

Understanding the asymmetrical coverage approach

A loudspeaker’s output is not experienced only directly in front of the grille. The useful listening area extends sideways and vertically, and the cabinet’s orientation changes how that area relates to the audience. The PS10-R2’s rotatable asymmetrical horn is intended to make that relationship adaptable. The relevant question is where listeners are in relation to the cabinet, rather than whether a coverage figure looks wide or narrow in isolation.

For upright audience use, a system designer may need to direct useful coverage across the listening area while avoiding unnecessary energy beyond it. For a floor monitor, the performer occupies a different position and may be much closer to the cabinet. The horn orientation needs to be considered in relation to that changed geometry. This is a practical reason to consult the PS10-R2’s own coverage drawings before choosing an installation orientation.

Rotation is a configuration feature of the model. It is not a promise that a particular orientation will suit every room or stage. The engineer still needs to consider cabinet position, listening height and the role of any other loudspeakers in the system. Combining those decisions is more useful than choosing horn orientation without reference to the actual application.

Passive operation and the complete signal chain

The PS10-R2 is a passive loudspeaker. The sound-system design therefore includes the amplifier and the specified processing as well as the cabinet itself. The processor’s role and the amplifier’s role should be distinguished: one manages the signal, while the other provides the output required by the loudspeaker load. A cabinet’s sale price does not define that complete operating arrangement.

When comparing amplification choices, read NEXO’s recommendations in context. A nominal impedance or an amplifier-power figure alone does not describe every operating condition. The intended loudspeaker count, the output loading and the manufacturer’s protection arrangement all matter. Use the exact model guidance when planning those relationships.

Using a PS10-R2 as part of an existing inventory

For a rental company or venue already using this model, the first useful check is identification. Confirm that the cabinets are PS10-R2 rather than relying only on the PS family name. Keep the appropriate processor setup associated with that exact model and record how the cabinet will be connected. That reduces ambiguity when equipment from more than one PS generation is stored together.

The same discipline helps where a loudspeaker may alternate between audience reinforcement and monitoring. Record the intended orientation and role for each setup. A consistent operating note can explain why the same cabinet is positioned differently from one event to another, without implying that its system settings should be changed arbitrarily.

What the published performance figures mean

The datasheet’s response and peak-level figures describe a measured system under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. They are useful for comparing the design with a system requirement, but they do not predict the level at every listener position in a particular venue. Distance, coverage direction, room behaviour and the rest of the signal chain also affect the result.

For that reason, use published data as part of a design process rather than as a substitute for one. Begin with the role the cabinet needs to fulfil, the intended listening area and the required operating level. Then compare those requirements with the model-specific documentation and the chosen processing/amplification arrangement.

Application and purchase considerations

The combination of a compact ten-inch format and adaptable coverage makes the PS10-R2 relevant to buyers considering a full-range cabinet with more than one possible deployment role. The right choice depends on the rest of the inventory and the application. A smaller cabinet is not automatically the right answer for a restricted space, just as a larger cabinet is not automatically a better answer for every listener area.

For this listing, the available quantity is six individually offered units at the stated unit price. A system may use several cabinets, but the number required should follow the intended coverage and engineering design. Additional processing, amplification and deployment hardware should be selected according to that design and the exact items actually specified for the sale.
