Martin Audio W8LMD

Martin Audio W8LMD

Martin Audio W8LMD is the wide-vertical-dispersion member of the miniature Wavefront line-array family. Martin Audio describes it as a three-way enclosure for individual use, short arrays and downfill duty with W8LM systems. It is a distinct model with its own coverage pattern.

The W8LMD uses dual 8-inch low/mid-frequency drivers and two 1-inch-exit compression drivers. Its nominal dispersion is 120 degrees horizontally by 20 degrees vertically. Passive and bi-amplified operating formats are documented, together with an amplitude-shading switch. The wider vertical pattern is relevant when comparing it with the narrower W8LM element; it should not be represented as the same cabinet under a different name.

Model overview

• Three-way miniature downfill format.
• Nominal 120-degree horizontal and 20-degree vertical coverage.
• Passive or bi-amplified operation.
• Nominal 12-ohm impedance.

W8LMD: the downfill role

A downfill enclosure addresses a particular part of an audience area. The W8LMD’s documented 120° horizontal and 20° vertical coverage should be considered in that role, rather than treated as the same pattern as a standard W8LM element. The required listening area and the position of the rest of the system influence whether that downfill pattern is appropriate.

Passive and bi-amplified operation are separate setup choices. The amplifier and processing arrangement must match the selected mode and the actual loudspeaker load. A physical resemblance within a product family does not establish identical wiring or settings.

For an existing Wavefront system, identify where the downfill contribution is needed and compare the exact W8LMD documentation with that design. The cabinet name establishes a model reference; it does not establish an included rigging package, an array configuration or a measured result in a particular room.
